The name "Schengen" originates from a small town in Luxembourg. In June of 1985, seven EU countries signed a treaty to reduce internal border checkpoints and controls and make travel between the countries easier. More countries have joined the treaty over the past years. At present, there are 25 Schengen countries, all in Europe.

Traveling in Europe for nationals who require entry visas has been simplified with the introduction of the Schengen visa. With a Schengen visa, the visa holder may enter one country and travel freely to other Schengen member countries without the need to obtain separate visas for each. Internal border controls have virtually disappeared; there are no or few stops and checks. This means that air, road and train travel are handled as domestic trips, similar to travel from one US state to another.
